Chinese Medicine Foundations and Theory

  • Between Heaven and Earth — An excellent introduction to Chinese medicine, no previous knowledge required.

  • Tao Te Ching: The Way — A series of meditations on the mysterious nature of the Tao — the Way, the light, the very source of all existence. Compiled in China around 2,500 years ago, the Tao Te Ching is a core text in the daoist view of life.

  • The I Ching — Book of Changes — The I Ching has served for thousands of years as a divination guide to consult the universe, a guide to an ethical life, a manual for rulers, and an oracle of one's personal future and the future of the state, and is at the very foundations of Chinese medicine daoist theory.

  • The Tao of Pooh — An exploration of daoism (the roots of Chinese medicine) through a beautiful story.

  • A Tooth From the Tiger’s Mouth — A renowned expert in Chinese sports medicine and martial arts reveals ancient Eastern secrets for healing common injuries, including sprains, bruises, deep cuts, and much more.

Herbalism

  • Evolutionary Herbalism — A book for the novice, an approach to herbalism that considers the holistic relationship among plants, humans, and the underlying archetypal patterns in Nature. Viewing Western herbal medicine from the same beautiful framework that Chinese medicine uses.

  • The Practice of Traditional Western Herbalism — Another great introduction to truly holistic herbalism rooted in understanding the pattern language of nature.

  • The Modern Herbal Dispensatory: A Medicine-Making Guide — An awesome basic but comprehensive guide to making and using approximately 250 herbal medicines at home, with instructions for everything from harvesting to administering low-cost, DIY remedies.

  • Master Recipes from the Herbal Apothecary — Very similar to the previous book, but has a bit more in depth basic exploration of herbal medicine making.

Plant Medicine and Spirituality

  • The Secret Teachings of Plants — All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial-and-error experimentation. The heart-centered mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart’s ability as an organ of perception is developed.

  • Sacred Plant Medicine — In Sacred Plant Medicine Stephen Harrod Buhner looks at the long-standing relationship between indigenous peoples and plants and examines the techniques and states of mind these cultures use to communicate with the plant world.

  • Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm — All life forms on Earth possess intelligence, language, a sense of I and not I, and the capacity to dream. By consciously opening the doors of perception, we can reconnect with the living intelligences in Nature as kindred beings, become again non-domesticated explorers of life.

  • Pharmako/Poeia: Plant Powers, Poisons, and Herbcraft — This trilogy is an encyclopedic study of the history and uses of psychoactive plants and related synthetics. A unique, reliable, and often personal immersion in this medically, culturally, and spiritually fascinating subject.

  • The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge — A curious exploration into the possible origins of life on this planet, and explores the deeper mystery of DNA.
